Away from the consumer scrum!

The last day of November and what a beautiful day it was.  We had an early lunch and then went for a short walk nearby.

This is one of my favourite places and I always feel at peace up here on the Ridge with distant views in all directions.

It was so quiet nothing to be heard but the birdsong - bliss!  No traffic, no ringing of tills, no pushing and shoving, not another soul to be seen!

I love the inky tracery of the trees against the skyline at this time of year although it is strange that not all the leaves have yet fallen from some of the trees.

Just look at that sky - isn't it fabulous?

There's something about gateways with a view beyond isn't there?  They draw me in and I feel I want to walk further, maybe to that horizon?  But not today as it would be dark and cold long before I got there!

The sun is low in the sky now and the colour of the foreground is dark in photos but if you enlarge the photo by clicking on it the foreground is clearer..  Just look at that cloud formation isn't it great?

Back to the muddy lane where we had left the car, feeling refreshed and happy filled with gratitude for such a beautiful day, at this time of year something of a rarity.  Although a short walk it was just what was called for - I had seen the news reports of Black Friday and the fighting in the aisles to grab a bargain and had been struggling to understand what is happening in the world these days that people should behave in such a way. I could understand starving refugees behaving in such a maner when food parcels are dropped but for a television or an i-pad?  Surely not.  Black Friday is a comparitively new idea here.  Sadly it is often the worst ideas of American culture that we seem to adopt here in the UK and not their better ones,Thanksgiving now that's something we could adopt perhaps though for all I know that too might have become victim of commercialsim like Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas I saw this "tree" in a window display yesterday and thought what a good way to use up one's stash of yarns and reels of thread, thimbles and buttons etc!!

  1. Lovely sun-bathed photos, nice to view as the days have become foggy and overcast. I do SO agree with you about Black Friday. I got short shrift from some face book users when I expressed dismay and disgust at the scenes on the news, most people agreed but some couldn't get past the right to a bargain. I feel really sick at the sight of that fighting. We should keep our own traditions. Not go importing the worst of other countries.

  2. yep, I know where I'd rather be! Where my son works, the customers were queuing down the road.I can't imagine anything I want that badly!

  3. Sometimes I'm glad that I don't watch the news, Black Friday passed us by and I don't think we missed anything. I love following your walk, it looks like a glorious day! Antonia x

  4. Jane, so agree with you, on all points. I haven't left the house since last Wednesday! I'm working on a quilt for my grand daughter for Christmas. I think people here are beginning to view Thanksgiving as something to 'get over with' so they can throw themselves into the frenzy and excitement of 'the holidays' as so many now refer to them. Most retail employees have to be politically correct and not mention the word, 'Christmas'. I'll trade our Black Friday for your Afternoon Tea...

  5. P.S. That Christmas tree made out of yarn balls is clever!

  6. Nothing better than lovely peaceful English countryside. How lucky you are to live where you live. Thank goodness we don't have Black Friday here ......YET !

  7. Black Friday is something I avoid. I'm afraid Canadian marketers have imported it here as well. Such a pity. A walk in the fresh air, under such a beautiful sky, is a much, much better way to spend time.

  12. The countryside is always extra special when the shops are frantic isn't it. I completely agree with you about the horrors of Black Friday, I stay well away from things like that. It's not making anyone happy. On the other hand a walk like that is guaranteed to improve your mood I think. Wonderful. CJ xx

  13. You're leaning against an open door with me on this topic Jane. I just don't get it and neither do I want to. I'm with you on the idea of taking a walk instead. Aren't we lucky to be having this wonderful weather? It feels so different this year and I actually think the milder weather has delayed the Christmas start up. By now lots of houses all around are bedecked with lights etc but there's nothing so far. I think the sunshine is keeping it at bay until nearer the time!
