String bag?

I don't know if you could call this creativity or not - I suspect you'll think I've totally lost the plot!

Whatever can it be I hear you ask

A little bag but for what? Maybe a very small shopping bag? No.

A little dolly bag awaiting a lining of pretty material - that's a thought - but No wrong again!

It's a bag to hold the home made fat ball I have just made for the birds. Though I suspect that it will be the squirrel who takes a fancy to it and one snip with his teeth and it will all unrun - unless it is melded with the fat! Any other time I'd have plenty of nets from oranges or carrots or whatever but today I had nothing so necessity being the mother of invention I made my own!

PS The blue tits have found it and are busy at it I am glad to see

  1. How clever! I tried to make fat cakes, and put them in little plastic jelly moulds, but when I went to turn them out it didn't work at all, and I ended up just scooping the mix out with my fingers. I am not sure if it was too much fat, or too much dry - but it didn't come out at all like the ones you buy!

  2. Great idea, looks rather prettier than a plastic net.

  3. Oh that is a very clever idea! I love it and hope the squirrels don't nibble on it.

  5. I will remember your good idea next time I come to make a fat ball!! I can remember trying to balance one in a tree when it had no netting... It failed miserably!! :)

  8. Wonderful idea, if we see blue tits packing peanuts in a string bag we'll know the trend has taken off!

  9. I think it is great the way everyone over there helps the birds through Winter.

  11. Wonderful!I had the annual clear out of the "baking" cupboard just before Christmas and have been using melted suet with nuts and raisins and allsorts of out of date stuff. Have been putting it all into old coconut shells and dangling them in a tree. My usual visitors have been joined by lots of new ones and I have just loved observing.

  12. So thoughtful! Feeding the birds and animals in winter is a recurrent theme in many children's books I like reading with my son, hopefully helping him see we're not the only ones here.
    Your net is brilliant!

  14. Well done you - on two counts, feeding the birds with such panache!

We've got heaps of feeders hanging from one of our trees but they're not nearly as attractive as yours. The birds do need some help with all this snow around!

  15. Discovered your blog via Marmalade Rose, lovely photos, you certainly live in a beautiful part of the world. All the best with your 20mins a day crafting, the birds have benefited already.

Warm wishes for a crafty 2010, from "Downunder"

  16. Heading to my stash of yarn right now. What a great idea. Maybe, I can get the birdies closer to the house, so I can get a picture without heading out into the cold....

  19. We have put out suet cakes, but those horrid Starlings eat it and make such a mess. We have to take it down.
