I must go down to the sea again!

I must go down to the sea again to the lonely sea and the sky
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by .....

I didn't want to sail away like John Masefield in his poem Sea Fever but I did want to go to the seaside again before the school holidays when the beaches will be crowded with holiday makers.  So today having been to the weekly market at Dorchester and had some lunch it being only 2.30 we decided to catch a bus (bus passes at the ready) to nearby Weymouth some 8 miles distant.

Being a beautiful day the beach was already busy and the donkeys were ready and waiting for customers - I wonder if they know how many weeks of giving rides they have ahead of them now?

and the Punch and Judy stall all set up.

I hadn't realised that this is one of the few remaining seaside Punch and Judy shows left and although I don't like them myself and was always terrified as a child by the cackling voice of Punch as he regularly beat up his poor wife it is sad that such things are becoming so rare. (click on the photo to read the info board).

We wandered round to the old harbour where we sat over a cup of tea in one of our favourite cafes before walking back to the beach and along the Front where we caught the bus back to Dorchester where we'd left the car and were soon home.

A lovely breath of sea air- I can wait till September to visit here again now!

  2. Lovely.
I can't say that I have ever liked Punch and Judy shows, too violent!

  3. What a beautiful day at the seaside. I'm with you when it comes to Mr Punch - never liked him or his ghastly raucous voice. But I do like to see traditional old forms of entertainment being kept alive. I'm glad you had such a lovely trip, with such wonderful weather. CJ xx

  4. You certainly had a lovely day for it. I remember Punch and Judy shows from my childhood but they always scared me...and we used to have Shetland pony rides at the beach when I was a child too. those things have disappeared from our beaches many years ago but I did see them on English beaches when we were there.

  6. I can feel the sea breezes in your writing. John Masefield's poem was one I memorized in school and those first lines still come to mind. There's something about the sea that calls to the soul.

  7. It certainly is lovely there, and my favorite is the Tall Ship with all its masts - I love those ships! While I've never seen a Punch and Judy show, I know I never would have cared for it either as I do not care for puppets at all, nor circuses. A very odd child I must have been! But it was fun visiting at the shore with you today.

  8. Tenby is already busy for the summer. I think there are more people around than at half term and that's unusual for down here. I'm not a great one for the seaside in summer these days but everyone deserves a holiday and I shall be finished before the school holidays kick in. That was when we took our Weymouth holidays as kids. I remember those sands when there was no space between deckchairs and the queue at the ice cream kiosk was a mile long. Best thing about Weymouth was the old chap doing the sand sculpture! Great memories of a place I am still very fond of. I always love to read about it again when you go there.

  9. Wonderful post, thank you
I had a bit of a start before clicking to enlarge the donkey photo (didn't register donkey on the right as a donkey). Looking at your pictures, I was thinking its almost as if your live in a vacation.

  10. Yes, there is a downside to living in beautiful areas, they get full of tourists! Weymouth beach is beautiful we visited in October one year and it was lovely even at that time of year :). Beautiful pictures thank you for sharing :)

  13. I do so envy you your proximity to the sea proper. We can be on a beach within an hour but Rhyl and Prestatyn are not exactly pretty and really sit on a very wide estuary.
