One thing leads to another

I have been making slow progress with my little bag - mainly because I have been making it up as I go along which rarely works out first time and usually has to be unpicked and done again!

I put a little pocket on the back and then discovered that it wasn't deep enough and would likely mean that anything put in it would fall out but as I didn't have any more of the cream leather effect fabric I couldn't redo it deeper and so put a magnetic press stud on it but that then meant I had to unpick the bottom of the bag to get at the inside of the pocket lining ..... and so it goes!

I still need to stitch the base and to make a lining for the bag plus some kind of strap but I think it will work eventually.  Whilst working on this I came up with a couple of other ideas for different bags I might make and realised that if you are creating something you are then more creative if you see what I mean and one thing leads to another in the ideas department!

You may remember I told you that I had met up with Carol when we went to the Tate Britain?  She had a little notebook with her containing odd sketches and notes and when I said how I wished I could draw or paint she suggested that it was a good idea to do a drawing each day - she has written a post about this here.  I took her advice and here are a couple of sketches I made ....

Steps outside the back door
I have to admit that I didn't keep it up every day but it was a good exercise as even if my drawing didn't improve any it made me look at things properly which can only be a good thing.  I will try to get back to a daily drawing but I am not promising anything and nor do I think I will be showing you any great art!
Nothing to do with any of the above - I have fitted a little emergency exit to the bird bath/drinking water dish having had to rescue several black beetles I have found paddling furiously in the water!  Hope they will find the way out next time.

Another trip to London is in the pipeline for this coming week!  I'll show you where we go later in the week if you are up for another guided tour?!  Thanks for you kind comments on the previous post - I must admit I couldn't do it every day and was tired and ready for early roost that night but I love London and never get fed up with it as there are so many interesting places to see.

  1. I do like the fabrics you have used in your bag. In't it disheartening when you have to start again, or re-do.

  2. It's funny but I got my old sketch books out to show my son. My art tutor said we should draw for 20 mins every day. Every year that's one of my NY resolutions, but I always end up spending the time sewing :-)
Your crazy patchwork is very pretty, I like the addition of the buttons.

  4. I'm not sure why you think you can't draw Jane!!!
    Creativity breeds creativity .
Thank you so much for your recent comment, I really appreciated it. I know you know what this is like...it's a hard old slog.

  5. Those drawings looked pretty good to me. The stairs would have been especially difficult I think.

  6. The bag is great, and I really love the sketch of the jug, it's lovely. I hope you have (another!) good day in London, I'd love to see a post about it. It's the closest I ever get to the big city these days! CJ xx

  7. Daily drawing is an excellent discipline. I did it for two and a half years until I was ill, then I didn't want to record the more recent days. I will get back to it, though.

  8. Your sketches look great to me, far better than anything I could do :). Your sewing sounds like wonderful progress to me, I find I learn far more going through that process than following a pattern or tutorial.

Enjoy your day out in London :)

  9. It really is true if you practice sketching you get your eye in! I wouldn't say I have any skill re drawing, but I get better when I keep a little sketch book going. You are a darned sight better than me! Lx

  11. There is nothing wrong with your sketches at all, I really should do the same, my old art tutor would be mortified if she knew that I have stopped.

I have restarted calligraphy though, and knitting!

  12. Love that crazy patchwork panel - it will make a lovely bag. I remember an age ago when I was an art student we had to draw every day and show our sketchbooks at the end of every month - I dreaded it and always spent the last few days of the month frantically looking for subjects to draw!

  13. Love your crazy patchwork bag. Your sewing process reminds me a lot of mine, I have a tendency to make things up as I go but it does lead to some challenges. You are so right about being more creative if you keep creating. Your sketches are lovely. I think it's time I got my sketch books out again and start drawing a little bit everyday. I did that earlier last year and it was great.

  14. Creativity is blossoming at your place. Love the little crazy patch bag. Making it up as you go along requires a lot of brain power. I usually do it that way, too, and wonder why it's taking so long.
    Love your loose sketches!

  15. Hi Marigold, just caught up with our bloggings- you've been busy! Love the crazy patchwork which reminded me of the piece we saw at the Folk Art exhibition. Another thing I'd like to try doing! Also loved your drawings. I've been trying to do one per day, might put some more on my blog soon.... and must get back up to London before the cold weather too! C xx
